A New Year's Eve Blue Moon

I just wanted to give you a little heads up. On this New Year's Eve there will be a blue moon. While there are several definitions of a blue moon, the most common is the second full Moon in one calendar month. What does this mean astrologically? Well, not much - other than the implications of any full Moon on your chart. If the full Moon is sitting on top of one of your personal planets (Sun, Moon, Venus, Mercury, Mars) then you are going to feel it emotionally whether it is blue, green or chartreuse. If BOTH full Moons in December (the first being Dec. 2, 2009) impact your personal planets, well it will be a wild holiday season for you for sure!

The reason I bring this up is twofold. One, can you imagine what a full Moon will do to already crazed New Year's revelers? Two, I might suggest a more meaningful way to ring in 2010; instead of joining them in drunken revelry why not sit outside and look up at the beautiful Moon and see what messages it has to tell you for the future.

  1. Question: How often does the second full moon in December occur on New Years eve?

  2. It is very rare - the next one won't happen for another 19 years!

  3. Thank you very much for the reply.

That's too rare for there to be any traditions of observing or celebrating, or is it? Do you know of any?
Does this event have any historical or magical significance in any culture current or ancient?

    Thanks again

  5. Hi! I just surfed in from google...My birthday is on December 31st, and it's the blue moon... It seems like it should mean something, but what? I'm going to be 46. Where can I find out? Thanks!

  6. Hi Sue - Welcome.

It all depends on the relatinship between the transiting moon (this Blue Moon) and your Natal Moon. (Where the moon was when you were born.) If they are in strong aspect to one another, yes, you will feel it emotionally.

Your birthday won't have much of an effect on it - unless the Moon is making a big impact on your Natal Sun.

    Thanks
    Joan

  11. May you all enjoy a wonderful New Years Eve in whatever way you celebrate it. May the future be a fulfillment of our collective potential and see an end to the madness of hate.

In case that fails, I have a good bottle of wine to share.

  15. (From wikipedia:)
In calculating the dates for Lent and Easter, the Clergy identify the Lent Moon. It is thought that historically when the moon's timing was too early, they named an earlier moon as a "betrayer moon" (belewe moon), thus the Lent moon came at its expected time.
    # Folklore gave each moon a name according to its time of year. A moon which came too early had no folk name – and was called a blue moon – bringing the correct seasonal timings for future moons.

  16. Wow this is turning into Capricorn City!

THanks Deborah - I didn't know where the term BLUE came from!

Happy New Year - goats and non goats alike

  17. Thanks Deborah for the traditional definition of a Blue Moon. I believe it was the Farmers Almanac that started the more modern definition of a Blue Moon as being the second full moon in a calendar month.

Do you know the name of the moon that occurs on 12/31/2009? Or is this one a Blue moon by both definitions?

  18. All the goats came out of the woodwork! I too have a birthday on the 31st - #43...

  19. Geez I want to change my birthday -- Oct 26 is seeming so boring now

  20. Joan P. I agree.
July, 14 1956 is my B-day. I was born in Chicago a lowly crab. I was born mid-century and in the middle of the USA. Very boring when compared to those born on New Year's Eve.

What is a gathering of goats referred to as? Is it a flock?

    HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone!

  26. Yes Gary - I think a flock of goats is indeed a flock.

Crabs are wonderful creatures... When they aren't being moody.

Anyway, I normally feel strength from the moon at it's fullest - last night's moon had a feeling of hopefulness to it. Came into the New Year feeling that many postive events will be occuring in my life this year.

  35. Nicole, I am sorry you are having a bad time. Yes, it could be the Moon, it could be Saturn. If you order a chart analysis I will give you a 60 -90 minute audio report on your birth chart and current situation.
